How She Got Here
Alex creates things out of nothing, and got here by doing exactly that.
The thing that's changed over time isn't her drive. It's the quality of what she can build, and the team she gets to build it with. Her creation, Bon Bon Bon, is a nerdy, high-quality, thoughtful little chocolate company rooted in Hamtramck, Michigan, now expanded to five locations across the state.
When Alex discovered really well-made chocolate, she was instantly hooked by the craft. Her mission became clear: apply her creativity to change the status quo of an already-established industry. She believed she could be better.
The Pivot
"Initially, creating Bon Bon Bon felt delusional. I think it was."
She was working incredibly hard on something that didn't exist yet. Most people would have waited for proof before committing this fully. Alex didn't need it. She built the thing first and let the proof catch up to her.
The Cost of Building
In reality, Alex didn't have balance until she had kids. When her twins were born and she returned to work, she protected her personal time for the first time in her life.
"My old habits of working till burnout were never serving me in the way I would convince myself they were."
What felt like a luxury turned out to be the thing that made everything else sustainable, a lesson that reframed how she'd worked for years.
The Emotional Turning Point
There wasn't one defining moment for Alex. There was a montage: a series of meet-cutes with the people who joined her team and expanded what felt possible in ways she never could have anticipated alone.
"When someone is the right person, it's transformative. An exponential energy and opportunity to learn and grow."
Not a day goes by where someone on her team doesn't express gratitude for that dynamic.
Her Philosophy of Showing Up
For Alex, taking care of others and taking care of herself are the same thing. Bon Bon Bon takes care of its customers, and that only works if the people behind it are taken care of too.
Maintenance feels like taking action. Growth feels like engaging in curiosity.
"Taking care of others is the way that we take care of ourselves. And because of that, we must take care of ourselves so that we can continue taking care of others."
Why Alex Embodies 'On Her Time'
Alex's rhythm isn't typical, but it has a flow: printing her schedule and writing her to-do list every morning, truing it up and prepping for the next day every evening. By committing to those two things no matter what, her weeks can fluctuate around the business, rather than the business fitting around her. Structure isn't a constraint. It's what makes the freedom possible.
Bon Bon Bon was born from a delusional idea, a love of craft, and the belief that good people deserve good chocolate. Built, on her time.
